What You Need

To fix your lawn, you’ll need a few things.

  • Shovel
  • Rake
  • Lawn mower
  • A seed spreader
  • Grass seed
  • Water
  • Topsoil
  • Roll of sod (optional)

Tip 1: Use Seeds

Begin by mowing your existing grass as closely as possible. Clear it from any dead grass or weeds, etc. Use a shovel to cut the area around the bald spot, removing the dead turf. Remove a couple of inches of grass before you start filling the bald spot with topsoil.

Make sure that the new topsoil is level with the rest of the yard. Pat it and rake it to smooth. Then, cast seeds so the area while gently raking topsoil to cover it. You can cover it with straw to protect it against birds and also to help keep it moist. Moisture is essential to help repair a dry, patchy lawn.

Tip 2: Overseeding

Overseeding is pretty much like the first tip but on a wider scale. The basics are the same but this works great if your lawn seems thin all over. Rake the entire area well, removing dead grass, debris, etc. Start casting the seeds all over the turf. Then, cover it with half an inch of topsoil.

To help ensure the seeds will thrive, gently rake the seeds and soil into the grass. Water it early morning and evening. You can start applying fertilizer before summer starts to prepare them for dry days.

If you notice a round patch surrounded by green grass, it’s most likely caused by pet urine. Water the area so it’ll be diluted and try to keep your pets off the lawn until the grass has reseeded.

Tip 3: Use Sods

This is by far the quickest and easiest way to fix your lawn. You can purchase rolls of sod from a garden center or a sod farm. Before you start filling the bald spots with sod, make sure you have prepped your soil correctly. Keep it away from debris, and dead leaves, and keep it moist. Keep the area level with the rest of the lawn.

Lay the sod tightly against the soil by pressing it firmly and make sure the edges are snug against the rest of the lawn. You can pat it or walk all over it to help it settle.

There you have it! In no time, you’ll have a beautiful lawn perfect to look at. You can even upgrade your lawn by learning budget-friendly DIY landscaping ideas for your yard.
